Mose und Elija, diese Feuersäulen, waren groß in ihren Werken... Sie sind unter den Propheten die Ersten. Sie sprachen frei mit Gott, sie nahten sich ihm gerne, um ihn zu bitten und mit ihm von Angesicht zu Angesicht zu reden (Ex 34,5 1 Kön 19,13) – eine erstaunliche und unglaubliche Sache! Sie waren darauf bedacht zu fasten, und das führte sie zu Gott (Ex 34,28; 1 Kön 19,8). Das Fasten verschafft, zusammen mit den Werken, also ewiges Leben. Durch das Fasten werden die Dämonen wie mit einem Schwert in die Flucht geschlagen, denn sie können die damit verbundenen Freuden nicht ertragen; was sie lieben, sind Spieler und Trunkenbolde. Aber dem Fasten ins Gesicht zu schauen, das ertragen sie nicht. Sie ergreifen die Flucht; so lehrt es uns Christus, unser Gott, wenn er sagt: „Diese Art von Dämonen kann nur durch Fasten und Beten ausgetrieben werden“ (vgl. Mk 9,29). Deshalb lehrt man uns, dass Fasten den Menschen ewiges Leben verleiht... Fasten gibt denen, die es ausüben, das Vaterhaus zurück, aus dem Adam vertrieben worden ist... Gott selber hatte, menschenfreundlich wie er war (Weish 1,6), den von ihm geschaffenen Menschen zunächst dem Fasten überlassen, wie eine liebevolle ‚Mutter' einem Lehrer. Nur von einem einzigen Baum sollten sie nicht essen (Gen 2,17). Und hätte der Mensch diese Art Fasten eingehalten, hätte er bei den Engeln wohnen können. Aber er hat sich nicht an das Verbot gehalten; er hat sich Kummer und Tod eingehandelt, ein Hausen in Dornen und Gestrüpp, die Bedrücktheit eines Lebens unter Schmerzen (Gen 3,17f). Wenn sich das Fasten sogar im Paradies als nützlich erweist, um wie viel mehr tut es das hier auf Erden, und zwar um uns das ewige Leben zu verschaffen!

I got a rude reminder of how dependent we've grown on ubiquitous telecommunications, as AT&T decided to take a sick day, cell phone service-wise. The outage only lasted an hour or so, but I suddenly found myself on the road with no way to call into a scheduled scrum standup (can it be a standup when you're sitting in your car?) and no way to email to let them know what was going on.

Total outages have been pretty rare, but it wouldn't take much from a solar storm perspective to knock everything offline, something I wrote about several years ago. Try to imagine modern society with no power, telecommunications or GPS navigation for a few days, and losing cell service for an hour gets put into its proper perspective.

Now that I'm back at home with a nice reliable fiber connection, I can give you the news of the week.

Tux can only flash people wearing chrome, now

As was reported previously, Adobe is starting to gracefully put Flash out to pasture in favor of HTML5. The deathwatch took another step forward this week, with Adobe announcing that only Chrome will be able to run Flash under Linux in the future.

One could argue that Linux never was much of a market for Flash anyway, but following on the heels of the announcement regarding mobile support, it should be clear that Flash is on the way out. Flash was once considered the last best hope for seamless integration across desktop and mobile platforms, held back only by Apple's intransigence. Now, all eyes are on HTML5.

Getting laid off doesn't sound so bad now, does it?

In the "developed world," software professionals spend a lot of time worried about intellectual property, career viability, privacy issues, and the like — our version of "first world problems." Once in a while, however, we get harsh reminders of the kind of real problems that can face a software developer in less-friendly circumstances.

Such is the case of Saeed Malekpour, an Iranian-born engineer and Canadian resident, who is currently facing a death sentence in Iran, accused of creating a pornographic network. According to most sources, the only thing that Malekpour actually did was to create a program that could be used to upload photos to websites, and that code had been incorporated into pornographic websites without his knowledge.

Malekpour confessed to running a pornographic network after a year in custody, a time when his supporters claim he was frequently tortured. What is certain is that very soon, if nothing is done, he will be executed, likely by being beheaded.

It's easy to write this off as a symptom of extremist ideology, but it should also serve as a wake-up call to open source and freelance developers who never plan to venture outside so-called "developed" countries. It is far too easy to imagine some hapless developer being dragged off to an undisclosed location because his or her software was found on the laptop of a jihadist. The problem with writing software is that you never know who may end up using it.

Putting Apple's labor issues in perspective

I just watched the "Nightline" report on Apple's production facilities, run by Foxconn in China. I'm sure that there's lots of righteous outrage afoot about the low wages (starting at $1.80 an hour) and cramped living conditions at the facility. I thought it was worth putting things in perspective, however.

To make it clear at the outset, I'm not in any way an apologist for China's government or social system. But I suspect you could find lots of people living in the U.S. willing to work for that wage, provided with lodging for $17 a month and a meal that cost about an hour's wage. As the report pointed out, the suicide rate at Foxconn is actually below the average in China, at 1.7 suicides per 100,000. For comparison, U.S. police officers experience 18 suicides per 100,000. And lest we become too indignant about factory accidents at the Foxconn facilities that killed more than two dozen in the past few years, we should remember that the U.S. doesn't have a shinning record in this regard either.

The point I'm making is that Apple makes an easy target because of its size and because some people want to make trouble for the company whenever they can. However, if we're going to attack Apple, let's do it for the right reasons. By most accounts, Apple is doing a much better job ensuring worker rights and safety than the industry as a whole.

An art charity saved the crucial collection after employee's call, but was too late to save another archive dumped by the V&A

Art historians have been disturbed by allegations that the Tate was about to dump its invaluable photographic archive in a skip when another institution realised its importance and rescued it, and that the Victoria & Albert Museum has already destroyed its own thematic archive. Curators, who consider such resources vital, were not consulted.

The archives were full of photographs of artworks from their collections and beyond – crucial visual histories, invaluable for comparative research and for studying any deterioration as a result of time or restoration.

Brian Allen, director of the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, a UK educational charity with links to Yale University, expressed disbelief that the Tate, as the holder of a national collection of British art from the Tudors onwards, did not treasure its archive.

Allen says he received a call out of the blue from a "low-ranking" Tate employee, who told him: "Someone said … you might like the curatorial photo archive because we're about to throw it on to a skip."

Allen says he immediately dispatched a van to salvage the hundreds of boxes, and was taken aback to discover that they included confidential material – so confidential that he asked the Tate to take items back. These included sensitive documents relating to government committees and export applications.

Tate confirmed its archive is now with the Mellon Centre but a spokeswoman denied it had been destined for a skip.

"In 2008, Tate decided it would be more useful for scholars if this photographic research material on British art, which had not been augmented since the 1980s and much of which is available online, were to be located with equivalent material at Paul Mellon Centre."

At the V&A, a source lamented the loss of its archive of black and white photographs of almost every item in the museum's collection grouped by subject.

He said: "Because the picture library had to move to a smaller room, the man in charge of it, off his own bat, skipped the lot, without telling any of the curatorial departments … I was so angry I could hardly speak. I did think of writing a note to the director. But what's the point? It was too late."

The V&A admitted dumping archival material using "a secure data disposal service". A spokeswoman denied the decision was a mistake, explaining that in removing the picture archive in 2007 to make way for new gallery space, it believed that a thematic archive "wasn't a method of classification that was really necessary any longer", as it had duplicates of photographs and digital files.

The Tate's archive, some items nearly a century old, was amassed by generations of curators, allowing them to trace changes of attribution, ownership and condition. The images came from scholars, conservators, government departments, dealers, auctioneers and owners.

Some photographs were of otherwise unrecorded works, and were the only image in existence. Others were shots of important pictures taken by different cameras, in different lights and from different angles over many years, often showing dramatic changes, one source said.

One old photograph enabled the Tate to turn down a painting offered to the gallery because it showed how much of its original paint surface had at one point peeled off.

Although the archives' disposal occurred within the past five years, the news has only now emerged.

Christopher Wright, an art historian, said: "The scandal lies in the clandestine manner with which these disposals have been made … the Mellon is to be congratulated [for saving the archive]." He recalled the furore in 2009 that prevented the Courtauld Institute closing its photographic library.

Michael Daley, director of ArtWatch UK, the restoration watchdog, condemned the archives' disposal as "scandalous".

He drew parallels with the "dreadful" destruction by art schools in the 60s of 19th-century plaster casts and copies of classical sculpture: "The new iconoclasts wanted to get rid of history … more forgivable for artists in the postwar flush of excitement about new possibilities in art. For historians to destroy archives, it should be inconceivable. It's just unforgivable."

He said scholars can never guess the significance they may find in photographic records. It may be 50 years before something suddenly resonates with some other evidence.

"Photo archives are almost more important than documentary records because photos are taken by machines without motive or vested interests."

The V&A spokeswoman added: "As a system for finding and accessing images, these thematically arranged black and white prints no longer served the needs of most researchers."

But art historians dismissed the defence, saying many items were not online and it would take years to achieve the same grouped classifications of the database the archive once provided.

Wright added: "What people don't understand is that multiple comparisons cannot be made and really studied simultaneously onscreen."

Here are a few of the data stories that caught my attention this week.

Infochimps makes its big data expertise available in a platform

The big data marketplace Infochimps announced this week that it will begin offering the platform that it's built for itself to other companies — as both a platform-as-a-service and an on-premise solution. "The technical needs for Infochimps are pretty substantial," says CEO Joe Kelly, and the company now plans to help others get up-to-speed with implementing a big data infrastructure.

Infochimps has offered datasets for download or via API for a number of years (see my May 2011 interview with the company here), but the startup is now making the transition to offer its infrastructure to others. Likening its big data marketplace to an "iTunes for data," Infochimps says it's clear that we still need a lot more "iPods" in production before most companies are able to handle the big data deluge.

Infochimps will now offer its in-house expertise to others. That includes a number of tools that one might expect: AWS, Hadoop, and Pig. But it also includes Ironfan, Infochimps' management tool built on top of Chef.

Infochimps isn't abandoning the big data marketplace piece of its business. However, its move to support companies with their big data efforts is indication there's still quite a bit of work to do before everyone's quite ready to "do stuff" with the big data we're accumulating.

How do you anonymize online publications?

A fascinating piece of research is set to to appear at IEEE S&P on the subject of Internet-scale authorship identification based on "stylometry," which is an analysis of writing style. The paper was co-authored by Arvind Narayanan, Hristo Paskov, Neil Gong, John Bethencourt, Emil Stefanov, Richard Shin and Dawn Song. They've been able to correctly identify writers 20% of the time based on looking at what they've published online before. It's a finding with serious implications for online anonymity and free speech, the team notes.

"The good news for authors who would like to protect themselves against de-anonymization is it appears that manually changing one's style is enough to throw off these attacks," says Narayanan.

Open data for the public data

O'Reilly Media has just published a report on "Data for the Public Good." In the report, Alex Howard makes the argument for a systemic approach to thinking about open data and the public sector, examining the case for a "public good" around public data as well as around governmental, journalistic, healthcare, and crisis situations (to name but a few scenarios and applications).

Howard notes that the success of recent open data initiatives "won't depend on any single chief information officer, chief executive or brilliant developer. Data for the public good will be driven by a distributed community of media, nonprofits, academics and civic advocates focused on better outcomes, more informed communities and the new news, in whatever form it is delivered." Although many municipalities have made the case for open data initiatives, there's more to the puzzle, Howard argues, including recognizing the importance of personal data and making the case for a "hybridized public-private data."

At TOC, you're as likely to run into media professionals, entrepreneurs and innovators as you are publishers, booksellers and others working in traditional publishing. This, in turn, makes the underlying themes as varying and diverse as the attendees. This is the first in a series, taking a look at five themes that permeated interviews, sessions and/or keynotes at this year's show. The complete series will be posted here.

Agile publishing, in terms of workflow, work environment as well as practical publishing applications was one of the overriding themes at this year's TOC.

Kristen McLean (@ABCKristen), founder and CEO of Bookigee, addressed agile in her session Hippo In Ballet Shoes, Or Greyhound On The Track? Applying Agile Methodologies To Traditional Publishing. She talked about how agile is a workflow strategy and cited "The Agile Manifesto":

She also discussed what the agile environment looks like in real-world publishing. Some highlights from her discussion include:

Self-organizing teams with flexible skills — get highly talented and interdisciplinary individuals
Accountability & empowerment — Give them what they need and trust them to get the work done.
Sustainable development, able to maintain a constant pace — each person should be able to commit only to what they can do in a day, a week, or a production cycle. Cut back features in order to deliver on time.
Face-to-face conversation is the best form of communication (co-location) — put the entire team in one place.
Completed tasks are delivered frequently — weeks rather than months
Completed tasks are the principal measure of progress — focus on real stuff, not on rituals, documentation, or other internal benchmarks that do nothing for your customer.

Firebrand Technologies' communications chief Laura Dawson (@ljndawson) held a session on metadata, Metadata is Not a Thing, that reinforced some of these ideas, in that an agile publishing environment requires solid metadata through every phase of the publishing process. Dawson talked more about metadata and workflows in a video interview:

The agile theme flowed in a practical direction in the Real World Agile Publishing session with Joe Wikert (@jwikert) of O'Reilly Media and Dominique Raccah (@draccah) of Sourcebooks, and moderator Brett Sandusky (@bsandusky) of Macmillan New Ventures.

Wikert talked about a variety of agile publishing projects at O'Reilly, including current book projects such as Todd Sattersten's "Every Book Is a Startup," which is based on a model of frequent updates to build content and dynamic pricing, and Peter Meyers' Breaking the Page, which is based on a freemium model. He also addressed other styles of agile publishing O'Reilly has experimented with, including early release projects and rough cuts, which offer early digital access and flat pricing. Wikert touched on short form content publishing as well, which he said allows for a quick turnaround to publish minimum viable products on cutting-edge topics.

Raccah announced that Sourcebooks would be using an agile publishing model to publish an upcoming book, "Entering the Shift Age," by David Houle. She outlined three goals for the model — more efficient product development, a better author experience, and more timely/updated books — and listed six guiding principles of agile publishing:

In a separate video interview, Sandusky addressed a question about whether agile applies universally to all types of books:

"'Books' is the part that I have a little bit of a problem with — I think agile applies universally to all kinds of digital product development. That could include books; that could include traditional print books with a POD component; that could include many different types of digital products. 'Books,' in terms of the traditional model of 'build a print book, take it to manufacturing, and then take it to launch' is not an agile process. But if your workflow is more digitally focused, then I think it applies to all digital products overall."

Also in a video interview, Todd Sattersten (@toddsattersten), author of "Every Book is a Startup" and founder of BizBookLab, addressed a question about how publishers can apply agile development methods:

"I'm interested in how we take the concept of a minimum viable product and apply it to how we develop content. The problem with books is that we tend to believe they have to be big and long and carefully constructed. With minimum viable product, it's really the exact opposite — what is the smallest amount that we have to do? It could be just putting up a splash page and saying, "Are you interested enough in this idea to share an address?" We're very familiar in book publishing with the idea of pre-sales — why not sell a book before we actually invest a whole bunch of money in producing the book?"

Ein gestern veröffentlichter Beschluss des Bundesverfassungsgerichts vom 09.11.2011 (Az.: 1 BvR 461/08) durch das ein Strafurteil gegen einen (Neo-)Nazi aufgehoben wurde, hat ein kleines Rauschen im Blätterwald verursacht. Die Frankfurter Rundschau und SPON haben berichtet und Heribert Prantl schreibt in der Süddeutschen gar, das BVerfG würde damit der Strafbarkeit der Holocaust-Leugnung still und leise den Garaus machen.

So sehr ich Prantl ansonsten schätze, aber dieser Kommentar von ihm bewegt sich in juristischer Hinsicht deutlich neben der Spur.

Was war geschehen? Ein Anhänger des nationalsozialistischen Gedankenguts hatte einem Gastwirt eine Mappe übergeben, deren Inhalt das BVerfG folgendermaßen umschreibt:

(…) Informationsmaterial in Form von zwei Redemanuskripten („Trauermarsch anlässlich des 60. Jahrestages der Bombardierung Magdeburgs“ und „Trauermarsch anlässlich des 60. Jahrestages der Zerstörung Würzburgs“), die der Beschwerdeführer in der Vergangenheit öffentlich gehalten hatte, sowie jeweils eine Kopie mehrerer Aufsätze des „Kampfbundes gegen Unterdrückung der Wahrheit in Deutschland“, darunter „Die Geschichtslüge des angeblichen Überfalls auf Polen im Jahre 1939“ und „Über die verantwortlichen Staatsmänner, die den Zweiten Weltkrieg verursachten und die ihn zu verhindern suchten“. Im erstgenannten Aufsatz wird unter anderem im Zusammenhang mit dem Holocaust behauptet, es sei wissenschaftlich erwiesen, dass es keine Gaskammern für Menschen gegeben habe. Im zweitgenannten Aufsatz wird der Holocaust an den Juden als „Zwecklüge“ bezeichnet.

Das Landgericht, dessen Urteil das BVerfG aufgehoben hat, hat den Beschwerdeführer nach § 130 Abs. 2 Nr. 1a, Abs. 3, Abs. 5 StGB wegen Verbreitung von Schriften, die den Holocaust leugnen verurteilt.

Wer einen Kommentar zum StGB aufschlägt, kann dort nachlesen, dass die Weitergabe von Schriften an einzelne, bestimmte Personen selbst dann noch kein Verbreiten darstellt, wenn diese Weitergabe zum Zwecke der Veröffentlichung geschieht. Gemessen daran, war die strafgerichtliche Verurteilung falsch, weil die Gerichte den Begriff des Verbreitens äußerst weit ausgelegt haben, um den wie es hieß glühenden Verfechter der nationalsozialistischen Ideologie verurteilen zu können.

Das BVerfG macht also zunächts nichts weiter, als eine Entscheidung zu korrigieren, die bereits nach dem Strafgesetzbuch falsch ist. Weil das Gericht aber keine Superrevisionsinstanz ist und einer Verfassungsbesschwerde nur dann stattgeben kann, wenn eine spezifische Grundrechtsverletzung vorliegt, musste es entscheiden, dass diese Überdehnung des Straftatbestands der Volksverhetzung den Beschwerdeführer gleichzeitig in seinem Recht auf Meinungsfreiheit verletzt.

Das Bundesverfassungsgericht bleibt hierbei argumentativ zunächst auf seiner bisherigen Linie und betont, dass die Leugnung des Holocausts allein für sich betrachtet nicht dem Schutzbereich der Meinungsfreiheit unterfällt. Das Gericht führt dann aber weiter aus, dass die den Holocaust leugnenden Ausführungen untrennbar mit Meinungsäußerungen verbunden sind. In der “Geschichtslüge des angeblichen Überfalls auf Polen im Jahre 1939“ sieht das Gericht primär ein Bestreiten der Schuld Deutschlands am Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs, verbunden mit der Behauptung des Beschwerdeführers, dass dies eine Lüge der Nachkriegsgeneration sei.

Diese Differenzierung überzeugt nicht wirklich, denn sie zeigt, dass man die Leugnung historischer Fakten durchaus noch als von der Meinungsfreiheit geschützt ansieht, solange nicht der Holocaust (alleine) geleugnet wird. Würde man die Leugnung des Holocausts allerdings ebenfalls als vom Schutzbereich der Meinungsfreiheit umfasst ansehen, dann hätte man als Verfassungsgericht ein enormes Problem diesen Eingriff nach Art. 5 Abs. 2 GG als verfassungsrechtlich gerechtfertigt anzusehen. Denn dann würde sich das Gesetz, insbesondere § 130 Abs. 3 StGB, gegen eine ganz bestimmte Meinung richten und wäre damit kein allgemeines Gesetz mehr. Weil man also die Strafbarkeit der sog. “einfachen Ausschwitzlüge” nicht als Verstoß gegen die Meinungsfreiheit bewerten will, aber ansonsten in diesem Bereich offenbar bemüht ist, die Strafbarkeit nicht zu weit ausufern zu lassen, vollzieht man in Karlsruhe manchmal Spagate, die rechtsdogmatisch schwer nachvollziehbar sind.

Allein deshalb wird aus diesem Einzelfall aber noch keine Grundsatzentscheidung und eine Abkehr von der Strafbarkeit der öffentlichen Leugnung des Holocausts begründet die Entscheidung schon gar nicht. Das Bundesverfassungsgericht hat lediglich ein Urteil eines Strafgerichts korrigiert, das bereits nach den Vorgaben des Strafgesetzbuches falsch war. Es möchte offenbar nicht, dass man Leute, nur weil man sie als glühende Nazis betrachtet, schneller verurteilt als andere. Das ist im Grundsatz zu begrüßen, denn es ist sicherlich die Aufgabe des Gerichts, der Entstehung eines Gesinnungsstrafrechts vorzubeugen. Dazu hat das Gericht allerdings einen Argumentationsansatz bemüht, den man im Lichte der eigenen Rechtsprechung des Senats kritisch hinterfragen kann.

Der Fall ist aber, entgegen der Meinung Heribert Prantls, nicht von allgemeiner Bedeutung und ändert nichts daran, dass die öffentliche Leugnung des Holocausts in Deutschland grundsätzlich strafbar ist.

Jonathan Gosier (@jongos), designer, developer and the co-founder of metaLayer.com, says the big data deluge presents problems for everyone, not just corporations and governments.

Gosier will be speaking at next week's Strata conference on "The Democratization of Data Platforms." In the following interview, he discusses the challenges and opportunities data democratization creates.

Your keynote is going to be about "everyone's" big data problems. If everyone really does have their own big data problem, how are we going to democratize big data tools and processes? It seems that our various problems would require many different solutions.

Jonathan Gosier: It's a problem for everyone because data problems can manifest in a multitude of ways: too much email, too many passwords to remember, a deluge of legal documents related to a mortgage, or simply knowing where to look online for the answers to simple questions.

You're absolutely correct in noting that each of these problems requires different solutions. However, many of these solutions tend not to be accessible to the average person, whether this is because of prices or a level of expertise required to use the tools available.

There is a lot of talk about a "digital divide," but there's a growing "data divide" as well. It's no longer about having basic computer literacy skills. Being able to understand what data is available, how it can be manipulated, and how it can be used to actually improve one's life is a skill that not everyone possesses.

There's an opportunity here for growth as well. If you look at the market, there are tools for visualizing personal finance (think Mint.com or HelloWallet), personal health (23andMe), personal productivity (Basecamp), etc. But the overarching trend is that there is a growing need for products that simplify the wealth of information around people. The simplest way to do this is often through visuals.

Why are visualizations so important to a better understanding of data?

Jonathan Gosier: Visualizations are only "better" in that they can relate complex ideas to a general audience. Visualization is by no means a replacement for expertise and research. It simply represents a method for communicating across barriers of knowledge.

But beyond that, the problem with a lot of the data visuals on the web is that they are static, pre-constructed, and vague about their data sources. This means the general public either has to take what's presented on face value and agree or disagree, or they have to conduct their own research.

There's a need for "living infographics" — visualizations that are inviting and easy to understand, but are shared with the underlying data used to create them. This allows the casual consumer to simply admire the visual while the more discerning audience can actually analyze the underlying data to see if the message being presented is consistent with their findings.

It's far more transparent and credible to reveal, versus conceal, one's sources.

One of the pushbacks to data democratization efforts is that people might not know how to use these tools correctly and/or they might use them to further their own agendas. How do you respond to that?

Jonathan Gosier: The question illustrates the point, actually. It wasn't so long ago that the same could be said about the printing press. It was an innovation, but initially, it was so expensive that it was a technology that was only available to the elite and wealthy. Now it's common (at least in the Western world) for any given middle-class household to contain an inexpensive printing device. The web radicalized things even more, essentially turning anyone with access into a publisher.

So the question becomes, was it good or bad that publishing became something that anyone could do versus a select few? I'd argue that, ultimately, the pros have out-weighed the cons by magnitudes.

Right now data can be thought of as an asset of the elite and privileged. Those with wealth pay a lot for it, and those who are highly skilled can charge a great deal for their services around it. But the reality is, there is a huge portion of the market that has a legitimate need for data solutions that aren't currently available to them.

Here are a few stories that caught my eye this week.

Three reasons why direct billing is ready for its close-up

In a sign that direct billing is gaining credibility beyond the realm of online games and media, WorldPay, a payment network for sellers, said it would add Boku as a method of payment to its system. Direct billing companies like Boku, BilltoMobile, and Bango let people buy things by entering a mobile number online and replying to a confirmation SMS text; the charges show up on their cell phone bills. Execs with these firms often describe them as "banking for the unbanked," but the reality has been that in practice, many of the "unbanked" are online game players who are too young to have bank accounts.

But that seems bound to change. Direct billing has at least three things going for it that make it an attractive option right now for mobile payments.

The first is the potential user base. The graphic above, from Boku's site, shows the numbers that these services pin their ambitions on. There are two billion credit card accounts in the world, but more than five billion mobile phone accounts. Each of those mobile numbers is a unique identifier that the carrier can identify anytime, anyplace in the world. Compare that to the experience many of us have had where your credit card issuer puts a hold on your account because it is suspicious that you paid for a taxi in Chicago on Tuesday but are now buying lunch in Puerto Rico on Thursday.

Second, PayPal is about to train its millions of mobile customers to pay for things by keying in a mobile number. Its real-world retail pilot at 51 Bay Area Home Depot stores allows users to do just that (or use a PayPal card) to pay for hardware and other real-world goods. PayPal bought Zong, a direct-billing leader, for $240 million in July 2011. It has woven that technology into its suite of customer payment methods, though the process now taps your PayPal account rather than showing up on your mobile phone bill. And that's probably a good thing: One of the things that has held direct-billing back has been the reticence of mobile carriers to go along with a scheme that threatens to anger their subscribers when they open their monthly bills to see totals that are hundreds of dollars more than they spent on telecom services. The direct-billing companies have helped the carriers get over their hesitation by offering them a cut of the charge, much higher than the few percentage points that credit card companies charge for transactions.

The third great thing that direct billing has going for it is that it could allow people to pay for real-world goods now, no matter what kind of mobile phone they have. We've written a lot about NFC wireless as a tap-and-pay solution coming "soon." But so far in the U.S., only a handful of Nexus G users on the Sprint network are able to pay for goods using NFC and Google Wallet. Verizon's decision last December to lock Google Wallet out of its rollout of Samsung's Galaxy Nexus due to "security concerns" made the advent of universal NFC a little less certain. Direct billing, however, works on any mobile phone that supports text messaging. As Boky co-founder Ron Hirson pointed out in a column on Venture Beat last year, the more advanced benefits of a mobile wallet accompany direct billing, and no NFC is required. As Hirson wrote, the real advantage to mobile payments isn't the supposed convenience of tapping your phone compared to swiping a plastic credit card; it's the integration with other apps on the phone for record-keeping, bargain hunting, rewards tracking, financial planning, and the option to go social.

Is social commerce not commercial enough?

A Bloomberg story published late last week said Gamestop plans to shutter its Facebook store after disappointing results. The article also noted that over the past year, three prominent retailers — Gap, JCPenney, and Nordstrom — have all opened and closed stores on Facebook, too. The report quoted Forrester Research analyst Sucharita Mulpuru explaining the disconnect that's leading to disappointment:

"There was a lot of anticipation that Facebook would turn into a new destination, a store, a place where people would shop. But it was like trying to sell stuff to people while they're hanging out with their friends at the bar."

The report was noticed, and widely reposted and linked to. A counter-point published by Forbes on the same day appeared to get less attention. In that piece, Wade Gerten, CEO of 8th Bridge, which makes social shopping software, suggested these companies failed because they didn't understand what social commerce (or Facebook commerce) really is. Gerten wrote that it's not about setting up your Facebook page as a checkout stand; that's what your website does. It's more about tapping Facebook's best qualities — sharing, bragging, and asking — to help people discover what you're offering. He cites Ticketmaster and Delta Airlines as two successful practitioners of the art. Neither company attempted to replicate its website's transactional activity within Facebook's walled garden, but each organization used that channel to promote their offerings. So maybe it's not exactly F-commerce but F-marketing?

Meanwhile, with Facebook's ability to push merchandise now slightly tarnished, we look for a new champion. Pinterest is barely on the radar screen, but Forbes' Jeff Bercovici writes that it's already a better place for social commerce. "Pinterest isn't a bar," Bercovici writes, referencing Mulpuru's quote in Bloomberg's story. "It's more like a craft fair where people go to exhibit their wares, check out other vendors' offerings, or do a bit of both."

How to dial a telephone (again)

Our smartphones are so capable, and we're so adept at using them to manage our lives, that it's funny to look back and see that people once needed instruction in the most basic of phone operations: how to dial a number and place a call. But an ancient 10-minute black and white film on AT&T's Tech Channel (embedded below) shows the lengths that "the Bell network" went to in preparing their customers for the switch from operator-assisted calls to dialing systems. Rows of nerdy guys in white shirts and pocket protectors line up to yank out the fuses at the stroke of 12, while other white-shirted guys in another room at the same moment yank out strings that activate the new systems. A model who might have been Lucy's Connecticut neighbor explains some of the basics, like what a dial-tone and busy signal sound like, how to look up a number in the directory, and even how to dial a rotary phone.

Actually, the instructions on how to use a rotary dial phone — "making sure your finger firmly touches the finger stop with each pull of the dial" — are as novel now as they were when this film was produced. My young kids found an old one in their grandparents' house (not in service) and had fun marveling at how this heavy, black analog beast was able to make calls.

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) announced that the Direct Project would be required in stage 2 of Meaningful Use.

As usual the outside world knew almost instantly because of Twitter. Nearly simultaneous posts from @ahier (Brain Ahier) and @techydoc (Steven Waldren MD). More information followed shortly after from @amalec Arien Malec a former leader for the Direct Project.

There are some other important announcements ahead of the official release, such as the end of support for CCD, but this requirement element has the deepest implications. This is jaw-dropping news! Meaningful Use is the standard by which all doctors and hospitals receive money for Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems from the federal government. In fact, the term "Electronic Health Record" is really just a synonym for "meaningful use software" (at least in the U.S. market). Meaningful Use is at the heart of what health IT will look like in the United States over the coming decades.

The Direct Project has a simple but ambitious goal: to replace the fax machine as the point-to-point communications tool for healthcare. That goal depends on adoption and nothing spurs adoption like a mandate. Every Health Information Exchange (HIE) in the country is going to be retooling as the result of this news. Some of them will be totally changing directions.

This mandate will make the Direct Project into the first Health Internet platform. Every doctor in the country will eventually use this technology to communicate. Given the way that healthcare is financed in the U.S., it is reasonable to say that doctors will either have a Direct email address to communicate with other doctors and their patients in a few years, or they will probably retire from the practice of medicine.

It was this potential, to be the first reliable communications platform for healthcare information, that has caused me to invest so heavily in this project. This is why I contributed so much time to the Direct Project Security and Trust Working Group when the Direct Protocol was just forming. This is an Open Source project that can still use your help.

The Direct Project is extensively covered in "Meaningful Use and Beyond" (chapter 11 is on interoperability). I wrote about the advantages of the Direct Project architecture. I helped arrange talks about about Direct at OSCON in 2010, and in 2011, I gave an OSCON keynote about the Health Internet , which featured Direct. I wrote a commentary for the Journal of Participatory Medicine, about how accuracy is more important than privacy for healthcare records and how to use the Direct Project to achieve that accuracy. I pointed out that the last significant impact from Google Health would be to make Direct more important. I am certainly not the only person at O'Reilly who has recognized the significance of the Direct Project, but I am one of the most vocal and consistent advocates of the Direct Project technology approach. So you can see why I think this a big announcement.

Of course, we will not know for sure exactly what has been mandated by the new revisions of Meaningful Use, but it is apparent that this is a huge victory for those of us who have really invested in this effort. My hat is off to Sean Nolan and Umesh Madan from Microsoft, to Brian Behlendorf and Arien Malec, who were both at at ONC during the birth of Direct, to Dr. David Kibbe, Brett Peterson and to John Moehrke. There are countless others who have contributed to the Direct Project, but these few are the ones who had to tolerate contributing with me, which I can assure you, is above and beyond the call of duty.

Obviously, we will be updating "Meaningful Use and Beyond" to include this new requirement as well as the other changes to the next version of Meaningful Use (which apparently will no longer be called "stage 2"). Most of the book will not change however, since it focuses on covering what you need to know in order to understand the requirements at all. While the requirements will be more stringent as time goes on, the core health IT concepts that are needed to understand them will not change that much. However, I recommend that you get a digital copy of the book directly through O'Reilly, because doing so entitles you to future versions of the book for free. You can get today's version and know we will update your digital edition with the arrival of subsequent versions of the Meaningful Use standard.

I wonder what other changes will be in store in the new requirements? ONC keeps promising to release the new rule "tomorrow." Once the new rules emerge, they will be devoured instantly, and you can expect to read more about the new standards here. The new rule will be subject to a 60-day commentary period. It will be interesting to see if the most dramatic aspects of the rule will survive this commentary. Supporters of CCR will be deeply upset and there are many entrenched EHR players who would rather not support Direct. Time will tell if this is truly a mandate, or merely a strong suggestion.

Justin McGuirk hops on board for a first look at Thomas Heatherwick's state-of-the-art redesign of the classic bus

It is known simply as "the new bus for London", but the vehicle that enters service on Monday is essentially the return of that much-loved London icon the Routemaster. This symbol of the capital was retired in 2005 and consigned to a ghoulish afterlife on countless mugs and T-shirts. Mayor Boris Johnson pledged to bring it back, and so he has. Our mayor may have no strategic vision for the city, but he has a talent for the popular gesture – and Routemaster II is one. Being able to hop on and off the back of an open bus is a Londoner's birthright, he might argue, so get hopping. But what is more encouraging about this move is the demonstrative return of good design to the capital's infrastructure.

It is not until you've taken a ride on the new Routemaster that you become fully aware of how unlovely our current fleet of buses is. For years now, they have been produced by manufacturers whose only imperatives were cost, and satisfying a growing pile of regulations. It's no wonder that stepping on to one is like entering an A&E ward: bright orange handrails everywhere, fluorescent strip lighting, baby blue flooring and a fibreglass interior that erupts into mysterious bulges in awkward places. There is nothing to be fond of.

By contrast, the original Routemaster, designed in 1954 to replace the trolley buses, remains full of rich associations for Londoners. Many of them will no doubt have sentimental memories of smoking on the upper deck or canoodling in the love seat by the staircase. So is this "new bus for London" a nostalgic throwback? Surprisingly not. It is a state-of-the-art workhorse designed to drive one of the busiest routes in the city – the number 38 from Victoria to Hackney. It may look like it's for sightseeing but it's built for rush hours.

Transport for London describe this as the first bus designed for London in 50 years. What they mean is that, while London-style buses are used country-wide, no other city in the UK faces the same heavy usage as the number 38. There are three doors, including the open platform at the rear, to facilitate quick entry and exit. In other words, this is bespoke for London in a way that the Mercedes bendy buses (axed by Boris) were not, as they ill-suited the capital's often narrow, windy streets.

The concept designer of the new bus is Thomas Heatherwick, working closely with Wrightbus, its manufacturer. When he appeared on the scene in the late 1990s he was instantly cast as a British engineering genius, the creator of weird, wonderful structures such as the UK pavilion for the Shanghai World Expo in 2010. Undeniably inventive, his work has sometimes erred on the side of the self-indulgent. I must confess that when I first saw his new bus, with its ribbon window winding up the rear and side, I feared the worst. It seemed just the kind of silly styling I might have expected. But in fact it merely follows the path of the two staircases, making them bright and open spaces. Heatherwick says he wanted to expose the circulation of people around the bus just as you might in a glass-fronted building, and it's a compelling idea.

This design is one of very few fanciful notions. The side of the rear staircase is styled with a self-conscious glamour, but other than that, almost every feature of the bus is subject to some regulation or other. Within those strictures, Heatherwick has done an admirable job of making this a stately vehicle. He talks about restoring some of the "grandeur" and "dignity" of riding a London bus, qualities that "had evaporated in the name of pragmatism". And I must say that, riding at the front of the top deck, one does have a sense of privilege. It's not just that this bus offers better views than any before it (except the roofless kind), it's the feeling that every detail has been designed with care. The way the ceiling is moulded and the way the interior is softly lit with LED spotlights almost suggest a plane cabin rather than a bus. With its hybrid engine, it is also quieter than other buses, and much more fuel efficient.

Heatherwick has reintroduced the bench seat of old, but with individual cushions in a bespoke livery. Bus and Tube liveries are part of the visual language of London, and pattern recognition is one of the subconscious rhythms of its commuter life. An experienced citizen can tell what line they're on just from the seat covers. Designed to hide dirt, just like all the others, Heatherwick's is one for the digital age, highlighting the contours of the cushion just as a computer modelling programme might.

Such details aside, what is most impressive about this bus is how spacious and efficient it is. I assumed that the rounded roof was a reference to the original Routemaster's shape, but it turns out that it's a way of reducing the vehicle's perceived mass – this bus is 3m longer than the original, and 1m longer than recent ones. Couple that extra size with two staircases and three doors, and passengers should find it much less of a squeeze. The Routemaster II will also bring the return of the conductor, to oversee the use of the much-vaunted open platform. But since conductors will only patrol the bus during the daytime, the open platform will alas be shut behind perspex doors at night.

Only eight of these buses will be in operation by the summer time. With an overall budget of £8m, the tabloid press is predictably whingeing about them costing £1m each. The other way of looking at it is that, amazingly, Transport for London is investing money in research and development instead of just taking whatever manufacturers give them. From here on, it won't cost much more to build one of this new breed than it does to build a boxy competitor. Whether or not the order is given to put them into production will come down to politics. In May we may have a new mayor and a new agenda. If Ken Livingstone wins, he shouldn't write this off as one of Boris's whims but embrace it as an investment in the daily life of Londoners.

  Joachim Gauck bleibt in seinem neuen Buch inhaltlich vage: Mit der Freiheit des Menschen gehe die ethische Pflicht einher, Verantwortung zu übernehmen, lautet der Tenor. Seine Einsicht hat er mit Sätzen ausgeschmückt, die Zweifel daran aufkommen lassen, ob er als der Präsident mit der schönsten Sprache in die Geschichte eingehen wird…
  Über seine Tätigkeit als “Dissident” hat er wenig zu erzählen. Im Westen denkt man, der neue Bundespräsident sei “ein Bürgerrechtler”…
  Ganz in diesem Sinn lautet die Generalthese seines Buches so: Mit der Freiheit des Menschen gehe die ethische Pflicht einher, Verantwortung zu übernehmen. Nur er, nur der vielgelobte Redner, kann sich erlauben, diese ebenso wahre wie bestürzend banale Erkenntnis bedeutungsschwer zu verkünden…
  Die Entspannungspolitik der 70er und 80er Jahre hält er für feige “Appeasementpolitik”.

2. Erhellendes zum Gauck’schen Verständnis von “Freiheit“
  Ein alter Artikel aus “Die Welt“ vom April 1991 ist nunmehr erstmals im Internet – zunächst in Auszügen – frei für jeden Lesewilligen verfügbar. Darin lesen wir von einem Gespräch zwischen Joachim Gauck und dem Stasi-Hauptmann Terpe im Sommer 1988.

  Anmerkung WL: Wir wollen die Tatsache, dass Gauck bei der Stasi den Decknamen „Larve“ führte nicht überbewerten. Schon gar nicht nehmen wir Formulierungen eines von der Stasi verfassten Gesprächsprotokolls als bewiesene oder unzweifelhafte Aussagen. Insofern sollte Joachim Gauck alle Möglichkeiten haben seine Sicht der Dinge darzustellen. Im Gegensatz zur nach der Wende eingerichteten Stasi-Unterlagen-Behörde wollen wir auch nicht mit irgendwelchen Schnipseln aus Stasiunterlagen eine Art „Schnitzeljagd“ gegen Menschen spielen und mit zweideutigen Formulierungen aus solchen zweifelhaften Dokumenten Verdacht schüren.
  Leider kann man das von dem früheren Chef der Stasi-Unterlagen-Behörde, Joachim Gauck, nicht ohne weiteres behaupten. Seine Behörde verfolgte mit solchen „Dokumenten“ unerbittlich etwa Manfred Stolpe oder Gregor Gysi und viele andere, was bis zu jahrelangen gerichtlichen Auseinandersetzungen führte. Gauck hat solche Methoden nicht gestoppt im Gegenteil, er hat sich zum Ankläger und Richter zugleich gemacht: „De Maizière hatte gehen müssen, obwohl viel weniger gegen ihn vorlag. Stolpe blieb, obwohl er von vielen als belasteter angesehen wurde“, schreibt er in seinen Erinnerungen „Winter im Sommer – Frühling im Herbst“
  Ich erinnere mich noch gut daran, wie 1994 als NRW-Ministerpräsident Johannes Rau gegen Roman Herzog für das Amt des Bundespräsidenten kandidierte, auch gegen den Kirchenmann Rau wochenlang aus anonymen Quellen irgendwelche Zitate aus Stasi-Unterlagen den Medien zugesteckt wurden, indem ihm kollaborierendes Verhalten mit der Stasi vorgehalten wurde. Auch dagegen schritt Gauck nicht ein.
3. Gauck ist die falsche Person
  Nun ist es so weit: Joachim Gauck wird Bundespräsident. Die deutsche Öffentlichkeit tut so, als hätte sie nach einigen Nieten nun das große Los gezogen. Sie behängt ihn mit Würdigungen, die er nicht verdient. Er ließ sich in München bei einer Preisverleihung mit den Geschwistern Scholl vergleichen und wurde noch nicht einmal schamrot. Er hat niemals zur DDR-Opposition gehört, deren Akteure man im heutigen Sprachgebrauch Bürgerrechtler nennt. Er verließ erst Ende 1989 die schützenden Mauern der Kirche und kam über das Neue Forum in die Volkskammer.
  Aus dem Blätterwald tönt es nun: Der Bürgerrechtler Gauck. Und er reist ohne Skrupel auf diesem Ticket durch die politische Landschaft. Er ist kein Vater der protestantischen Revolution, sondern er gehört zu denen, die sie beendet haben. Endlich ist Gauck dort angekommen, wo er schon immer hin wollte – im konservativen Teil der westlichen Gesellschaft. Aber genau dieser Teil der Gesellschaft hat den Markt entfesselt. Die Konservativen haben die Geister gerufen, die ganze Länder in die Pleite treiben. In Deutschland öffnet sich die Schere zwischen den Armen und Reichen immer weiter. (…)
  Laut und deutlich will ich aussprechen: Gauck ist die falsche Person. (…) Ich habe mich bisher gescheut, Joachim Gauck zu widersprechen. Nun will ich aber nicht mehr schweigen.

1. Maulkorb für Gewerkschaften
  Der europäische Druck zu weiteren Sanierungsschritten in Griechenland wird immer größer. Dabei werden nicht einmal die unveräußerlichen Sicherheiten der EU-Grundrechtecharta geschont. So hat das griechische Parlament vor Kurzem die freien Tarifverhandlungen zwischen Gewerkschaften und Arbeitgebern vorläufig verboten – eine Maßnahme, die in Deutschland kaum vorstellbar ist. Die Maßnahme soll dazu dienen, das Lohnniveau in der griechischen Wirtschaft insgesamt zu senken. Unter anderem die Bundesregierung drängt darauf, die Löhne zu kürzen, um die griechischen Unternehmen “wettbewerbsfähiger” zu machen. Soll heißen: Wenn die Betriebe geringere Lohnkosten haben, können sie ihre Produkte leichter auf dem Weltmarkt verkaufen. Dadurch nähme der griechische Staat mehr Geld ein und bräuchte weniger Kredite. Die Troika aus EU-Kommission, Europäischer Zentralbank und Internationalem Währungsfonds will die Löhne so lange einfrieren, bis die Arbeitslosigkeit auf 10 Prozent zurückgegangen ist.

  Anmerkung Orlando Pascheit: Da ist er wieder einmal, der Mainstream, finsterste Neoklassik: Der Preis der Arbeitskraft muss nur genügend sinken und schon wird sie nachgefragt und es herrscht bald Vollbeschäftigung, weil bei niedrigeren Reallöhnen die Produktionskosten sinken, so dass mehr produziert wird. Dazu wird mehr Arbeit gebraucht. Man muss aber auf diese fragwürdigen Zusammenhänge gar nicht eingehen, denn im Mittelpunkt der Überlegungen der Troika, steht die Auffassung, dass durch Lohnsenkung die internationale Wettbewerbsfähigkeit Griechenlands gesteigert werden kann. Dazu sollte man sich aber schon einmal die konkrete Wirtschaft Griechenlands anschauen. Einem exportorientierten Wachstumsimpuls steht zunächst einmal entgegen, dass Griechenland im Gegensatz zu anderen kleinen Volkswirtschaften sehr wenig exportiert. Es hat die kleinste Exportquote der EU, d.h. es müsste zunächst einmal seine Exportbasis erweitern, welche aber grundlegend von seiner industriellen Basis abhängt. Die vorhandene verarbeitende Industrie ist aber vor allem auf den Binnenmarkt ausgerichtet. Eine Ausweitung der industriellen Basis kostet, wie die Vereinigung Deutschlands immer noch zeigt, Zeit und Geld. Die industriell hergestellten Güter (manufactured goods) machen im Falle Griechenlands laut „UNCATD Yearbook of Statistics 2011 etwa 50 Prozent der Exporte aus (Nahrungsmittel etwa 30 Prozent). Wenn diese Güter auch meist nicht in Konkurrenz zur deutschen Produktion stehen, sondern eher in einem komplementären Verhältnis stehen, so können wir aber einmal so tun, als ob dies der Fall wäre. Dabei fragen wir uns, was eine Lohnabsenkung für Griechenland in punkto Wettbewerbsfähigkeit brächte. Als erstes fällt auf, dass das Lohnniveau in Griechenland sowohl im Vergleich mit anderen westeuropäischen Staaten als auch im Verhältnis zu den Lebenshaltungskosten niedrig ist, d.h. dass in der Logik der jüngsten Forderungen Griechenland bereits extrem wettbewerbsfähig ist. Aber gemach, wir haben gelernt, dass nicht der Lohn allein, sondern auch die Produktivität d.h. dann die Lohnstückkosten für die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit eines Landes entscheidend ist. Überraschung: die griechischen Lohnstückkosten in der verarbeitenden Industrie erreichen nur 85 Prozent der deutschen Lohnstückkosten. Die griechische Produktion müsste demnach, wenn sie denn mit den hochentwickelten Industrienationen Europas konkurrieren würde, diese überrollen. Das entscheidende Problem ist eben, dass Griechenland in seiner Produktionsstruktur noch eine teure, Zeit kostende nachholende Industrialisierung vor sich hat – wie der Osten Deutschlands seit 1990, um eine Wettbewerbsfähigkeit mit Produkten auf der Höhe der Zeit zu erreichen. – Der Auslandstourismus, ein wichtiges Standbein der griechischen Wirtschaft, sozusagen der Export von Sonnenschein, Strand und Kulturlandschaften, macht laut DIW ein Zehntel bis ein Achtel der Wertschöpfung aus, aber die Arbeitskosten spielen im Gastgewerbe Griechenlands eine vergleichsweise untergeordnete Rolle. Hier bringt eine weitere Absenkung wenig, da Arbeitskosten der Konkurrenz im Euroraum bis auf Portugal bereits darüber liegen. Viel wichtiger ist für den griechischen Tourismus [PDF - 1.2 MB] der Wechselkurs gegenüber Kroatien, Nordafrika, Bulgarien und der Türkei.
  Die Einrichtung von Solaranlagen zwecks Produktion von Sonnenergie für Nordeuropa ist Zukunftsmusik.
2. Schuldenschnitt-Gesetz ist fertig
  Das Gesetz für einen möglichen Zwangs-Schuldenschnitt ist in Griechenland unterwegs. Am Donnerstag soll es verabschiedet werden. Es sieht vor, dass die privaten Gläubiger zum Forderungsverzicht gezwungen werden könnten, falls die Beteiligung am freiwilligen Schuldenschnitt zu niedrig ausfallen sollte. Dies teilte das griechische Parlament in Athen mit. Die Ratingagentur Fitch sorgte unterdessen für Aufsehen und stufte Griechenland von “CCC” auf “C” ab – die letzte Stufe vor der Insolvenz.
  Wahlverschiebung möglich
  “Es wäre gut, wenn die Regierung von Lucas Papademos mehr Zeit bekäme. Die Leute müssen spüren, dass sich etwas verändert”, sagte der frühere Finanz- und jetzige Umweltminister Giorgos Papakonstantinou im Gespräch mit der deutschen Wochenzeitung “Die Zeit”.

3. Griechenlands Trauma der Fremdbestimmung
  Im Dezember 1893 muss der damalige Ministerpräsident Charilaos Trikoupis der Weltöffentlichkeit gestehen: Sein Land ist pleite. Zwischen 1879 und 1891 hatte Athen sechs Staatsanleihen aufgelegt. Doch das im Ausland geborgte Geld floss in einen aufgeblähten Staatsapparat, Griechenland lebte über seine Verhältnisse. “Das Geld wurde mehrheitlich nicht für Investitionen in die Wirtschaft verwendet, sondern für Staatsausgaben wie das Militär”, sagt der Ökonom Michalis Psalidopoulos, Professor an der Universität Athen und der US-amerikanischen Tufts-Universität. Nach dem Bankrott 1893 begannen Verhandlungen, die sich lange hinzogen. “Die Gläubiger waren verbittert. Es gab ein fünfjähriges Tauziehen, ob und wie Griechenland mit der Rückzahlung beginnt”, sagt Psalidopoulos. Schuld an der zähen Einigung waren Schönhärl zufolge vor allem die Deutschen. Schließlich einigten sich die Gläubigerländer mit den Griechen auf die Einrichtung einer internationalen Kontrollkommission, die aus Vertretern der ausländischen Botschaften bestand. Die Souveränität Griechenlands wurde eingeschränkt, denn die Kommission konnte direkt auf einen Teil der Steuereinnahmen zugreifen. “Die Furcht, fremdbestimmt zu werden, ist eines der großen griechischen Traumata”, sagt die Historikerin Korinna Schönhärl . Die Finanzkommission konnte zunächst nur spärliche Erfolge vorweisen. Durch Steuereinnahmen konnte sie zwar die Zinsen bezahlen und Griechenlands Schulden sogar Schritt für Schritt tilgen. Wirtschaftlich kam das Land jedoch zunächst kaum voran. Wegen der hohen Schuldendienste blieben die Investitionen aus. Was sind die Lehren aus Griechenlands Erfahrung? Für Psalidopoulos wäre ein jahrelanges Spardiktat heute keine Lösung, denn damals sei der Preis zu hoch gewesen: Unruhen, politische Instabilität, Armut und Emigration. “Es muss eine richtige Mischung aus Konsolidierung der Staatsfinanzen und Wachstum der Wirtschaft gefunden werden”, sagt er. – Für die Gläubiger allerdings zahlte sich die damalige Lösung aus: Die Kontrollkommission überwies ihnen Zins und Tilgung – bis zum Einmarsch der Deutschen im Zweiten Weltkrieg.

Das Euro-Paradox: Stabiler Außenwert trotz innerer Krise
Das Krisenszenario in der Eurozone, das die Welt seit nunmehr zwei vollen Jahren in Atem hält, entfaltet sich erst – und solange – man die Mitgliedsländer als Einzelne betrachtet. Dann öffnet sich der Abgrund der Ungleichgewichte, die die finanzielle und politische Architektur des gemeinsamen Währungsraums von innen her zu sprengen drohen: Die in etwa ausgeglichene Außenbilanz der Eurozone zerfällt dann in einen riesigen und ständig weiter wachsenden Exportüberschuss Deutschlands einerseits und große Defizite der südlichen Euroländer und Frankreichs andererseits (siehe Grafik) – dies ist auch ein Abbild der ungleichen Entwicklung der Lohnstückkosten innerhalb des Euroraums im letzten Jahrzehnt.

…Deutlich schwerer wiegt der Befund, dass die Anti-Krisenpolitik der Europäischen Regierungen und der EZB der komplexen Natur der internen Verwerfungen im gemeinsamen Währungsraum überhaupt nicht gerecht wird, wobei die undifferenzierte Verordnung von Spardiktaten ganz offenkundig die Ungleichgewichte zwischen den einzelnen Euroländern immer weiter vergrößert und gleichzeitig nichts dafür tut, die finanzielle Transmission im Euroraum wieder herzustellen. Kann dieser Prozess des Auseinanderdriftens nicht schnell und entschlossen gestoppt und umgekehrt werden, wird das Vertrauen in die gemeinsame Währung schwinden und ihr Kurs spürbar weiter fallen.
Dabei hat die Krise dieses Auseinanderdriften keineswegs erst ausgelöst, sondern sie hat diese Entwicklung akzentuiert und ins Bewusstsein der Marktakteure gebracht.

Mini-Jobs, die am Schicksal der Arbeitslosigkeit möglicherweise nichts ändern oder der Niedriglohnjob, der nicht aus Hartz IV herausführt. Der Rekord bei der Erwerbstätigkeit wird überinterpretiert, da er insbesondere auf die gestiegene Zahl von Kleinstarbeitsverhältnissen und prekärer Beschäftigung zurück zu führen ist…
So blieb das von allen geleistete gesamtwirtschaftliche Arbeitsvolumen deutlich hinter dem Anstieg der Erwerbstätigenzahl zurück. Auch 2011 war es noch niedriger als in der ersten Hälfte der 90er Jahre. Ein niedrigeres Arbeitsvolumen wurde demzufolge auf mehr Schultern verteilt.

Wer wenig verdient und viele Überstunden macht, hat ein Anrecht auf deren Vergütung. Das Bundesarbeitsgericht hat einem Lagerleiter die Bezahlung seiner Mehrarbeit zugesprochen. Der Mann sammelte 968 Überstunden an.

EU-Nachbarn sichern Arbeitslose besser
Das einkommensabhängige Arbeitslosengeld wird in Deutschland nur relativ kurze Zeit gezahlt. Deshalb sind Arbeitslose hierzulande stärker von Armut bedroht als in anderen europäischen Staaten.
In der Bundesrepublik liegt das Einkommen von 70 Prozent der Menschen ohne Job unterhalb der Armutsgrenze. Im EU-Durchschnitt beträgt die Quote dagegen lediglich 45
Prozent. Das zeigen die aktuellsten vorliegenden Daten der EU-Statistikbehörde Eurostat aus dem Jahr 2010, die WSI-Sozialexperte Eric Seils aufbereitet hat. Als armutsgefährdet
gilt, wer weniger als 60 Prozent des mittleren Nettoeinkommens hat. In Deutschland verläuft diese Schwelle bei 940 Euro im Monat für einen Alleinstehenden.

Kommentar unseres Lesers H.H.: Schon die ersten Zeilen des Artikels muten etwas seltsam an. Da wird von einer angeblich erarbeiteten Reputation gesprochen, die Niebel nun verspielen würde. Dabei wurde und wird immer wieder die Personalpolitik Niebels thematisiert. Wenn der Minister seine Hauptaufgabe genau so ernst nehmen würde wie das Besetzen freier Stellern mit FDP-Parteigängern, bräuchte sich Herr Döring um die Reputation keine Gedanken machen.
Warum der Europäische Gerichtshof Acta stoppen muss
Die EU-Kommission hat dem Europäischen Gerichtshof Acta zur Überprüfung vorgelegt. Nun muss das Gericht sich bewähren und das Abkommen stoppen – denn hinter dem Vertrag gegen Produkt- und Markenpiraterie lauert eine EU-Richtlinie, die wirklich gefährlich ist. In ihr wird wahr, was die Netzgemeinde fürchtet.

1. Abgeschafft werden soll die schon länger auf acht Minuten gekürzte politische Berichterstattung der „Journale“.
2. Abgeschafft werden die „Resonanzen“ in der jetzigen Form – ein Sendeplatz, der als Schnittstelle zwischen Politik und Kultur definiert war, was ein großes und immer wieder überraschendes Spektrum an Themen möglich machte…
3. Abgeschafft werden die sonntäglichen „Resonanzen weltweit“, die einst als eine Art „Radioweltspiegel“ gedacht waren – damit fallen auch die spannenden und in einer globalisierten Welt notwendigen Blicke in andere Länder und Kulturen weg.
4. Verändert werden soll offenbar die bisher monothematische Literatursendung „Gutenbergs Welt“ – hin zu einem üblichen Literaturmagazin.
5. Erneut wird ein Stunden-Feature-Platz abgeschafft, dieses Mal der Sendeplatz am Sonntagnachmittag, den sich bisher das Musikfeature (3/4) und das Literaturfeature (1/4) teilen…Der frei gewordene Sendeplatz am Sonntag ist nun übrigens für Feature-Wiederholungen vorgesehen.

In den Hinweisen von gestern wiesen wir auf Bundesblog . Dort wird kritisiert, dass der MDR eine Abstimmung zurückzog, weil die Abstimmung deutlich zu ungunsten von Joachim Gauck verlief.
Dazu erklärt der MDR:
MDR zieht manipuliertes Voting zurück
Es war als Stimmungsbild im Internet gedacht und sorgt nun für Aufregung und Verärgerung bei den Nutzern des MDR-Internet-Angebotes. Nach einer technischen Manipulation des Votings “Ist Joachim Gauck der Richtige für das Amt des Bundespräsidenten” hat sich die MDR-Online-Redaktion am Montagabend entschieden, das Voting zu schließen und von der Seite zu nehmen.
Tausende Klicks in wenigen Minuten
Auslöser hierfür war eine offensichtliche technische Manipulation, durch die das Abstimmungsergebnis innerhalb von Minuten drastisch verändert wurde. Der amtierende Redaktionsleiter Holger Hentze sagte, nach 18 Uhr habe es innerhalb weniger Minuten Tausende Zugriffe gegeben. Dies sei äußerst auffällig und lasse darauf schließen, dass hier jemand technisch manipuliert habe.
Zuvor hatten sich Gauck-Befürworter und Gauck-Gegner nahezu die Waage gehalten. Danach kippte das Abstimmungsergebnis innerhalb von Minuten. Die Stimmen der Gauck-Befürworter stagnierten bei 841 und die der Gauck-Gegner explodierten geradezu und summierten sich auf 3.324. Daraufhin entschloss sich die Redaktion, wie in solchen Fällen üblich, das manipulierte Voting zu schließen und von der Seite zu nehmen.

Anmerkung WL: Wir können natürlich nicht überprüfen, ob die Begründung des MDR zutreffend ist, aber wir wollten sie korrekterweise erwähnen. Fox-News Reporter entlarven die Gesundheitsgefahren, die von einem Monsanto-Futterzusatz für Milchkühe ausgehen. Nachdem die Reporter sich geweigert hatten, die Vorwürfe gegen Monsanto zu entschärfen, wurden sie gefeuert. Die Reporter gehen dann an die Öffentlichkeit.

Dass sich die oftmals als “altehrwürdig” bezeichnete Süddeutsche Zeitung aber mittlerweile auf das Niveau des trashigen Boulevard-Blättchens mit den vier Buchstaben herab begibt, enttäuscht dann doch ein wenig!
Auf Seite 2 der heutigen Printausgabe präsentiert Ihr uns einen reich bebilderten Artikel zu Griechenland. In der Bildunterschrift erläutert Ihr uns, dass es ja nicht jeden Tag geschehe, dass einem Land Schulden erlassen werden und Milliardenkredite gewährt werden. Und dann verklickert Ihr uns doch allen Ernstes, die Abgebildeten würden sich bei Europa für diese Gaben bedanken!
Liebe Süddeutsche, wir verstehen ja: Karneval hinterlässt auch in den Redaktionsstuben Spuren und jenseits der 3,4 Promille ist es nicht immer einfach, die Wirklichkeit halbwegs unvernebelt wahrzunehmen. Dennoch die freundliche Frage: Sagt mal, wollt Ihr uns Leser eigentlich verarschen???
Die von Euch gezeigten Fotos zeigen keinesfalls “Jubelgriechen”, die sich bei Europa für die einschneidenden und ihre Arbeitsplätze und Lebensperspektiven dezimierenden “Hilfsmaßnahmen” der sogenannten Troika bedanken. Ganz im Gegenteil bedanken sich die Abgebildeten bei den Europäern, die in Solidarität mit der griechischen Bevölkerung überall in Europa ihren Protest gegen die Maßnahmen der Politik in Sachen Griechenland auf die Straße getragen haben. Die “dankbaren Jubelgriechen” sind also nicht mehr als eine Leser_innen-Manipulation erster Güte – “Qualitätsjournalismus” geht anders!

I was wondering how it would feel to be in the midst of 35,000 people whose livelihoods are driven by the decisions of a large institution at the moment when that institution releases a major set of rules. I didn't really find out, though. The 35,000 people I speak of are the attendees of the HIMSS conference and the institution is the Department of Health and Human Services. But HHS just sort of half-released the rules (called Stage 2 of meaningful use), telling us that they would appear online tomorrow and meanwhile rushing over a few of the key points in a presentation that drew overflow crowds in two rooms.

The reaction, I sensed, was a mix of relief and frustration. Relief because Farzad Mostashari, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, promised us the rules would be familiar and hewed closely to what advisors had requested. Frustration, however, at not seeing the details. The few snippets put up on the screen contained enough ambiguities and poorly worded phrases that I'm glad there's a 60-day comment period before the final rules are adopted.

There isn't much one can say about the Stage 2 rules until they are posted and the experts have a chance to parse them closely, and I'm a bit reluctant to throw onto the Internet one of potentially 35,000 reactions to the announcement, but a few points struck me enough to be worth writing about. Mostashari used his pulpit for several pronouncements about the rules:

HHS would push ahead on goals for interoperability and health information exchange. "We can't wait five years," said Mostashari. He emphasized the phrase "standard-based" in referring to HIE.

Patient engagement was another priority. To attest to Stage 2, institutions will have to allow at least half their patients to download and transfer their records.

They would strive for continuous quality improvement and clinical decision support, key goals enabled by the building blocks of meaningful use.

Two key pillars of the Stage 2 announcement are requirements to use the Direct project for data exchange and HL7's consolidated CDA for the format (the only data exchange I heard mentioned was a summary of care, which is all that most institutions exchange when a patient is referred).

The announcement demonstrates the confidence that HHS has in the Direct project, which it launched just a couple years ago and that exemplifies a successful joint government/private sector project. Direct will allow health care providers of any size and financial endowment to use email or the Web to share summaries of care. (I mentioned it in yesterday's article.) With Direct, we can hope to leave the cumbersome and costly days of health information exchange behind. The older and more complex CONNECT project will be an option as well.

The other half of that announcement, regarding adoption of the CDA (incarnated as a CCD for summaries of care), is a loss for the older CCR format, which was an option in Stage 1. The CCR was the Silicon Valley version of health data, a sleek and consistent XML format used by Google Health and Microsoft HealthVault. But health care experts criticized the CCR as not rich enough to convey the information institutions need, so it lost out to the more complex CCD.

The news on formats is good overall, though. The HL7 consortium, which has historically funded itself by requiring organizations to become members in order to use its standards, is opening some of them for free use. This is critical for the development of open source projects. And at an HL7 panel today, a spokesperson said they would like to head more in the direction of free licensing and have to determine whether they can survive financially while doing so.

So I'm feeling optimistic that U.S. health care is moving "toward interoperability and openness," the phrase I used in the title to his article and also used in a posting from HIMSS two years ago.

HHS allowed late-coming institutions (those who began the Stage 1 process in 2011) to continue at Stage 1 for another year. This is welcome because they have so much work to do, but means that providers who want to demonstrate Stage 2 information exchange may have trouble because they can't do it with other providers who are ready only for Stage 1.

HHS endorsed some other standards today as well, notably SNOMED for diseases and LRI for lab results. Another nice tidbit from the summit includes the requirement to use electronic medication administration (for instance, bar codes to check for errors in giving medicine) to foster patient safety.

Karl Marx zufolge wiederholt sich Geschichte bisweilen als Farce, wofür die Tatsache spricht, dass Peter Hartz einen Namensvetter hatte, der in der Weimarer Republik als Kritiker des Wohlfahrtsstaates hervortrat, die Leistungsfähigkeit des bestehenden Sozialsystems anzweifelte und mehr Privatinitiative forderte. Gustav Hartz war 1924 für ein paar Monate DNVP-Reichstagsabgeordneter. 1928 erschien sein Buch „Irrwege der deutschen Sozialpolitik und der Weg zur sozialen Freiheit“, in dem Gustav Hartz viele gegenwärtig aktuelle Fragen stellte, auch wenn er noch nicht dieselben Antworten (z.B. Einführung der Praxisgebühr) gab: „Geht man nicht bedenkenlos ein dutzendmal zum Arzt, wenn einmal genügte – nur weil es die Kasse bezahlt?“

Überall sah Gustav Hartz „Faulenzer und Drückeberger“ den Sozialstaat plündern, für die „kein denkender Arbeiter einen Pfennig Arbeitslosenbeiträge bezahlen“ wolle. Um „den Mißbrauch der ungerechten und unnötigen Inanspruchnahme“ unterbinden zu können bzw. „asoziale Elemente“ nicht mehr „auf allgemeine Unkosten reisen“ zu lassen, wollte Hartz die Hilfe auf tatsächlich Bedürftige konzentrieren, was er sozialdarwinistisch begründete: „Eine soziale Politik darf nicht mit der Sorge um die Kranken, Invaliden, Witwen, Waisen und Arbeitslosen die Förderung der Lebenstüchtigen, Leistungsfähigen und Arbeitenden vergessen.“ Wer würde da nicht an die Parole „Leistung muss sich wieder lohnen“ denken, die heutige Neoliberale im Munde führen?

Gustav Hartz klagte über „die Bleigewichte des Bürokratismus“ und forderte eine Abkehr von dem Glauben, „daß der Staat alles selber machen muß.“ Einer seiner Lieblingsbegriffe hieß damals schon „Reform“. Als möglicher Ausweg erschien Hartz der Aufbau individuell-familiärer Vorsorge, gekoppelt an die Pflicht zur „eigenverantwortlichen Selbsthilfe“. Von den Erwerbslosen sprach Gustav Hartz – in gewisser Weise entsprechende Überlegungen seines bekannteren Namensvetters vorwegnehmend – als „Kunden“ (noch in Anführungszeichen), die sich nach ihrer Entlassung „sofort bei der Arbeitsvermittlung zu melden“ hätten, damit diese sie kennen lerne und „die beste Kontrolle“ habe.

Die „staatliche Zwangsversicherung“ wollte Gustav Hartz abschaffen und ein System der privaten Vorsorge errichten, das auf individuelles Zwangssparen hinauslief. Hiervon versprach er sich einen Mentalitätswandel, der die Beschäftigten mit dem bestehenden Wirtschaftssystem aussöhnen sollte: „Es erscheint mir fraglos, daß eine ganz andere Auffassung bei den Arbeitnehmern über den Wert des Kapitals und bezüglich der Verantwortung für seinen Verbrauch und seine Mehrung entstehen muß, wenn jeder das Wachsen seines Kapitals täglich bzw. wöchentlich vor Augen hat.“

An die Stelle der gesetzlichen Sozialversicherung wollte Gustav Hartz „soziale Gemeinschaften“ (Gewerkschaften, Arbeitgeberverbände, Genossenschaften, Religionsgemeinschaften usw.) mit von ihnen betriebenen „Sozialsparkassen“ treten lassen. Arbeitgeberbeiträge, die zwar noch nicht als „Lohnnebenkosten“ und „Standortnachteil“ dämonisiert wurden, den etablierten Parteien aber schon damals ein Dorn im Auge waren, sollten dem Bruttolohn zugeschlagen und 15 Prozent davon als Sparbetrag abgeführt werden. Um ihrer Sparpflicht nachkommen und genügend Kapital im Rahmen der Sozialkassen ansparen zu können, sollten die Arbeitnehmer/innen täglich mindestens neun Stunden im Büro oder Betrieb verbringen: „Eine Stunde Mehrarbeit am Tage, als Sparstunde genützt, würde weit sozialer wirken, als der Achtstundentag je an sozialer Wirkung zeitigen kann.“

In diesen Tagen zieht mich die Liebe zum Kreuz meines Herrn mehr und mehr an. Jesus sei gedankt, dass es kein Strohfeuer ist, das beim ersten Regen erlischt, sondern ein Brand, der nie verlöscht. Dieser Tage habe ich noch ein schönes Gebet gefunden, das sehr gut zu meiner geistigen Befindlichkeit passt...: „O Jesus, meine gekreuzigte Liebe, ich bete dich an in all deinen Leiden... Ich nehme von ganzem Herzen, aus Liebe zu dir, jedes körperliche und geistige Kreuz an, das auf mich zukommt. Und ich gelobe, meine ganze Ehre, meinen Schatz und meinen Frieden auf dein Kreuz zu legen, also auf die Demütigungen, Entbehrungen und Leiden, und mit dem hl. Paulus zu sagen: 'Ich will mich allein des Kreuzes Jesu Christi, unseres Herrn rühmen' (Gal 6,14). Was mich betrifft, so will ich auf dieser Erde kein anderes Paradies als das Kreuz meines Herrn Jesus Christus“... Alles weist mich darauf hin, dass der Herr mich „auf dem Königsweg des heiligen Kreuzes“ ganz für sich haben will. Und auf diesem Weg und auf keinem anderen will ich ihm folgen... Ein wesentliches Merkmal dieser Einkehr war ein großer innerer Friede und eine große innere Freude. Sie machen mir Mut, mich dem Herrn in allen Opfern, die er meinem Gemüt auferlegen will, zu überlassen. Ich möchte, dass ich und mein ganzes Leben immer mehr von diesem Frieden und dieser Freude durchdrungen werden, nach innen und nach außen... Ich werde diese innere und äußere Freude gut zu bewahren suchen. Vom hl. Franz von Sales stammt der Vergleich: „Ich bin wie ein Vogel, der im Dornengestrüpp singt“. Ihn nehme ich unter anderem gerne für mich in Anspruch; er soll mir eine ständige Aufforderung sein. Also nicht viele vertrauliche Mitteilungen über das, was Leiden verursachen kann, viel Zurückhaltung und Nachsicht bei der Beurteilung von Menschen und Situationen; großes Bemühen, besonders für die zu beten, durch die ich Leid erfahre; und dann in allem viel Güte, uneingeschränkte Geduld, im Wissen, dass jede andere Haltung... dem Geist des Evangeliums und der Vervollkommnung im Sinne des Evangeliums nicht entspricht. Von dem Moment an, wo ich um jeden Preis die Liebe triumphieren lasse, soll es mir recht sein, für einen Niemand gehalten zu werden. Ich will auf mir herumtrampeln lassen, aber dabei geduldig und gütig sein – geradezu heldenmütig!

One of the oldest slave descendent communities in Brazil, Quilombo Rio dos Macacos, where around 50 families live, has a date for eviction: March 4, 2012. The claim for the land comes from the Navy of Brazil, that intends to broaden a condo for its officers in that territory, in the border area between Salvador and Simões Filho, state of Bahia.

Several social movements have demonstrated against [pt] the “flagrant disrespect for fundamental human rights”, motivated by what some describe as “institutional racism” [pt].

Among the community [pt] there are “people older than 100 years who were born in the same place where they have lived until now”, and who [pt] say that “they won't allow themselves to be evicted”.

Under a regime of tension and violence, terrified: [the quilombolas] ensure that they spend the night awake afraid to die (soldiers walk all night around their crops) and are afraid to go out because when they are back they can find the house torn down. The access to the community is controlled by the entrance gate of the Military Village, a housing condo for sub-officers of the Navy, and the conflicts [have] come especially with the construction of this town, since 1971. The families of the area were removed and displaced. Today they are forbidden to plant and are being expelled from the area.

Land is a right

Descendants of original peoples from Africa who, during colonialism, were taken from their land to become slaves in Brazil, the Quilombolas now see themselves under threat of losing their homes again, despite their right to the land they inhabit enshrined in the constitution. The representative of the Rural Workers' Lawyers Association (AATR), Pedro Diamantino, in an “Act in support of the quilombola Rio dos Macacos community”, which took place on February 6, explained[pt] the legal framework:

o artigo 68 das disposições transitórias da CF [Constituição Federal] garante “aos remanescentes das comunidades dos quilombos que estejam ocupando suas terras” a propriedade definitiva, porém este artigo até hoje não foi regulamentado, o que gera instabilidade jurídica. A demarcação de terras quilombolas atualmente está lastreada no decreto federal 4887/2003, que é um instrumento jurídico insuficiente para garantir a posse definitiva da terra.

The Article 68 on the transitional provisions of the CF [Federal Constitution] guarantees “the remnants of quilombo communities who are occupying their lands” definitive ownership, but this article has not yet been regulated, which creates legal instability. The demarcation of quilombola's lands is currently backed in Federal Decree 4887/2003, which is a legal instrument that is insufficient to ensure the final possession of the land.

And the federal MP Luis Alberto added [pt] that:

A draft amendment to the Federal Constitution (FC) is being processed in the Chamber of Deputies; it intends to call back the regularization of the quilombola's lands - nowadays under the responsibility of Palmares Foundation and INCRA - and other projects that aim to revoke all the decrees in favor of quilombos.

The lands occupied by the Quilombo Rio dos Macacos was donated by the city hall of Salvador to the Brazilian Navy in mid 1960. At the time, the existence of inhabitants was registered [pt] and the Navy was made responsible for any compensation that might arise from the transfer of land.

By the end of 2009, the Navy presented a proposal of eviction to the Justice. One year later, the Judge of the 10th Circuit Court of the Judicial Section of Bahia granted [pt] it; the eviction was scheduled for November 4, 2011 - exactly one month after the certificate of recognition of Rio dos Macacos as Quilombola Community was published on the Diário Oficial da União, from which a Self Recognition Certificate came out. The order of eviction ended up being postponed [pt] for 4 months by the Federal Justice, but until today March 4, 2012, remains as the date for expulsion.

I Am Quilombo Rio dos Macacos

The year started with a protest outside the wall that surrounds the Naval Base, and where President Dilma Rousseff was spending holidays. Tania Lobo published on Youtube a set of photos of the protest showing the signs held by the demonstrators, which read “Are you going to allow this President?”, “Navy wants to expel Quilombola Rio dos Macacos community”, “Community (…) asks for just, legal and immediate solution”, and “Navy forbids INCRA to enter the community Rio dos Macacos”.

Meanwhile, solidarity actions have multiplied, such as the collective declaration [pt] “Somos Quilombo Rio dos Macacos” (We Are Quilombo Rio dos Macacos), by several public figures, musicians, poets and activists from Bahia's movements.

A page on Facebook with the same name, as well as many blogs, have republished the community's manifesto, which demands for:

The 2011 report on Quilombola's Land [pt], published by the Comissão Pró-Índio from São Paulo on February 15, reveals that during the first year of Dilma Rousseff's government, only one Quilombola Land was titrated by the federal government, and that “the score of quilombola lands titrated in Brazil has reached 110, which means that only 6% of the estimated 3000 quilombola communities in the country have the title of their land.”

One Day on Earth

The collaborative film One Day on Earth was filmed all on the same day, October 10, 2010, with more than 3,000 hours of footage sent in from all corners of the world, showcasing the amazing diversity, conflict, tragedy, and triumph that occurs in one day. The Global Screening will take place on Earth Day (April 22, 2012) in every country of the world, with the assistance of World Heritage Sites and the United Nations.

Bioethicists are debating how, or even whether, one can remain impartial when working for industry as Glenn McGee, founder and editor of the American Journal of Bioethics, joins CellTex, a company that banks patients’ cells for untested stem cell therapies, reported Nature. McGee, who joined CellTex in December of last year and will step down from AJOB on March 1, says he hopes to bring ethical standards to CellTex’s stem cell trials.

CellTex licenses therapies from RNL Bio, a South Korea-based company that converts patients’ fat cells into patient-specific mesenchymal stem cells, which the company claims can be reinjected to treat conditions like spinal cord injury. To date, no clinical trials have been completed that back these claims.

Though criticism has been leveled at McGee for joining CellTex while remaining at AJOB, observers also wonder whether bioethicists can work in industry at all. McGee has argued that bioethicists have a place in industry, thereby helping bioethics to have a practical purpose. Others, such as Insoo Hyun, a stem-cell bioethicist at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, are doubtful. Hyun developed patient consent procedure for egg donation for Woo Suk Hwang, the infamous Korean stem cell researcher whose claims of human cloning later proved fraudulent.

“I know firsthand how difficult it is to separate conflict of interest—to maintain the role of bioethicist,” Hyun told Nature. “I know you need to not be too chummy with enterprises trying to speed ahead in stem cells.”

Hackfest Report

The FreedomBox Hackfest at Columbia University was a huge success. We hosted 25 people of diverse talents and interests. Some folks came to learn, acquire DreamPlugs and do a guided install of Bdale Garbee's FreedomMaker. Others took up parts of the (task list)[http://freedomboxfoundations.org]. We learned a lot about the boxes, ideas for routing, data modeling, and security concerns. Lots of people pitched in on the tasks list, and descriptions of that work are below. Most importantly, we had a lot of fun meeting each other and collaborating. If you are interested in any of it, please ask about it on the discussion list, especially if you want to help!

Huge thanks to everybody that participated. Many people came by just to learn about the FreedomBox, talk about their use cases and offer encouragement. That activity is very helpful, and we appreciated the fresh perspective.

We intend to do more hackfests, perhaps in more cities in the near future. This weekend was a great success in progress, bug squashing, design, and first-draft implementation of key FreedomBox infrastructure.

Thanks again to everybody and especially to Columbia University, Elizabeth Boylan, and ISOC-NY for logistical and material support.

Progress and Activities

Nick Daly, Issac Wilder, Ian Sullivan and I fleshed out my earlier, nascent Port Santiago work (more about that below) and implemented some basic FreedomBox discovery and connection functionality. Nick and Issac also sketched out a DHT scheme (codenamed Neruda) for finding boxes. Nick and Issac each did presentations on the routing issue. Joly Macfie from ISOC-NY took video of those presentations and will get them online this week.
Nick and Ian iterated hard on paired boxes (a dedicated, hard-coded, factory-set proxy server and client connection) as a way to roll out freedom to small numbers of people stuck behind national firewalls. We now have paired boxes that locate each other on the network and proxy for each other!
Barbara Mack came to us with expertise in data model-ling, and she spent her time doing deep thinking on the person model and how it connects to the rest of the FreedomBox.
BoxySean installed FreedomBox on a GuruPlug and updated the Wiki with details on how to do that more easily. There are a lot of GuruPlugs out there, and his work is a big help.
BoxySean and Brian Newbold started work on configuring the FreedomBox as a wifi router and connecting that up to Plinth for UI. They identified some FreedomMaker bugs. BoxySean updated the list on those bugs and we've been following up on closing them.
A team of people (most notably Marcus and Tyrone) from the FreedomTower project explored ways the FreedomBox can be added to their mobile internet stations to provide Free communication services to people connecting to the net via those stations.
Sean O'Brien familiarized himself with Plinth and intends to contributing to the router front-end setup effort.
David Garson dropped knowledge on configuration systems and virtual machines as test beds.
I updated Plinth with a new template featuring some design work by Robert Martinez (about which I will say more in a separate update).
I updated Plinth with a new template and chased down some bugs. Boxysean explored Plinth's bugs as well, albeit involuntarily. We'll have patches on those shortly.

Port Santiago

There is a problem we have been referring to as the "magic routing problem". It is the question of how two FreedomBoxes find each other on the internet and establish communication, even if one or both boxes are firewalled and neither is findable via DNS. We called it "magic routing" because we hadn't started to design the routing system and so we had to assume it happened by magic.

Our solution to this problem is to piggyback on the Tor network. Hidden services rely on Tor for routing and discoverability. The system works quite well and the Tor project does excellent work at maintaining that system and strengthening it against attack.

Nick Daly and Ian Sullivan built a simple server that listens on a local port and is reachable from the outside world by a Tor hidden service. It accepts authenticated queries and responds with information. For example, it can give your IP address to friends you trust.

To avoid burdening the Tor network and also to avoid the delays associated with using Tor, Port Santiago will allow two FreedomBoxes to decide on a faster (though less anonymous) method of communication. Subsequent communication will happen on that channel.

Right now, we are using Santiago to discover a FreedomBox's IP address for the creation of encrypted proxy tunnels. This will allow a FreedomBox to provide uncensored, unmonitored internet access to a friend who is stuck behind a national or corporate firewall.

Nick did the heavy lifting on this work with help from Ian Sullivan and in consultation with many of the Hackfest participants. Nick's documentation and code will be up on github soon.

Neruda

Port Santiago lets FreedomBoxes provide some basic information via a Tor hidden service, but users need a way to find out the onion addresses of their friend's services. The most obvious way to do this is with distributed hash tables (we also considered less obvious methods that piggyback on existing infrastructure, like bit.ly links). Issac and I planned out the DHT, how to access it, the data structures, and API. We are calling this system Neruda.

Neruda will allow users to take a GPG key and look up a user's Santiago onion address. Issac Wilder is speccing this out and coding it.

One benefit of reaching Santiago via a Tor onion address is that FreedomBoxes do not need to update Neruda very often. Even if your IP address changes, your onion address shouldn't. Updating your Neruda record is a rare event and it is acceptable to refresh Neruda's tables relatively infrequently. This might allow us to devote fewer resources to it.

Key Signing

FreedomBoxes are going to make a lot of use of GPG to authenticate identity and sometimes to encrypt data as well. To strengthen the web of trust, we did some key signing and also introduced some participants to gpg, generated keys and taught key management.
